As the weather turned nicer recently, I knew I needed some patio time.

I brought a group of friends and family to see how the atmosphere would measure up to the fun we were looking for.

We started with the shrimp cocktail and it did not disappoint. Chilled and flavorful, the crisp shrimp were complemented with a zesty cocktail sauce. One member of our group decided to try the raspberry margarita, which turned out to be the ideal drink for the season.

Refreshingly sweet with a nice balance of tartness, the margarita also sported a lovely sugar rim that helped elevate the experience.

For the main, I decided to go with the fish tacos.

The taco consisted of breaded whitefish, chipotle mayo, napa slaw, pico de gallo and sour cream all tucked into a flour tortilla, alongside chips and salsa. The pico de gallo added a vibrant and zesty kick, and the sour cream paired with the chipotle mayo added a smooth richness that tied it all together.

My friends, on the other hand, went with a different route. One tried the chicken teriyaki bowl which was a colorful mix of carrots, red cabbage, creamy avocado, roasted corn, onion and a base of rice. The chicken was juicy, and the savory teriyaki sauce only enhanced the char flavor from the grill.

Another friend opted for the smash burger with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion on a soft brioche bun, with pepperjack cheese for an added kick. Their side of sweet potato fries was the perfect addition — crispy on the outside and tender on the inside and paired perfectly with their signature sauces.

The relaxed yet vibrant and open atmosphere, paired with the delicious dishes and friendly service, made for an incredible meal, andI know now that I have to head down South First more often for gatherings, celebration dinners, and casual outings.

This summer, Houlihan’s will be offering “Patio Play” to highlight local artists for live music, along with happy hours specials.
